History & service
Two days after Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, Prime Minister Robert Menzies declared Australia at war. Nearly one million Australians served—first in the Mediterranean and Middle East (1940–41), then increasingly in the Pacific after Japan’s entry in December 1941. Women also served via newly formed Army, Navy and Air Force branches from 1941.By the war’s end in September 1945, almost 40,000 Australians had lost their lives.
Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, this coin honours all who served. The poppy wreath stands as an enduring symbol of remembrance across Australia and the Commonwealth.
