The First World War was not, sadly, “the war to end all wars”. Just over twenty years after the Armistice of 11 November 1918, the world was drawn into a second, even more destructive conflict. World War II began on 1 September 1939 with Germany’s invasion of Poland.
For Australia, the threat came closer than ever: Darwin and northern Australia were bombed in 1942–43 by Japanese forces. The first and most devastating raid, in February 1942, claimed over 250 civilian and service lives.
The conflict ended with Germany’s surrender in May 1945 and Japan’s formal surrender on 2 September 1945.
