A Bit of History 🇦🇺
In 2026, the Royal Australian Mint celebrates the 60th anniversary of Australian decimal currency and six decades of Australian numismatic history.
Australia officially changed to decimal currency on 14 February 1966, supported by the famous “Dollar Bill” public education campaign. Stuart Devlin’s original circulating coin designs became an iconic part of Australian history and remain instantly recognisable today.
Over the following decades, Australia’s coinage continued to evolve. The original round silver 50c coin was replaced by the distinctive 12-sided version in 1969, the $1 coin was introduced in 1984, and the $2 coin followed in 1988.
Australian decimal coinage has also produced many highly sought-after collectables, including the 1966 Wavy Baseline 20c, the 2000 $1/10c Mule and the popular 2012 Red Poppy $2 coin.
